Job Description: United Family Medicine has an immediate opening for a Full Time LPN or CMA/RMA (Certified / Registered Medical Assistant) to work days and evenings between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm and occasional Saturdays from 8am to 12pm at our large Family Practice Clinic.  UFM is also a teaching site for the United Family Medicine Residency Program.

Position Details: Permanent Full Time position available. Some Evening hours and Saturdays required. Starting date: A.S.A.P. Salary: Depends on Experience.

Responsibilities:  Rooming patients including taking vital signs, history, and preparing patient and equipment to be seen by the provider. Performs routine procedures including ekgs, audiograms, vision and hearing screenings, ear irrigations, TB skin tests, Spirometry and assisting with minor surgery and other procedures. Administers medications and vaccinations per provider order.

Qualifications:  Candidates should be an LPN preferably three to five years of clinical or related nursing experience or a CMA/RMA, new graduates encouraged to apply.  Prefer ambulatory care experience. American Heart Association BLS certification, RMA/CMA certification. Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.

Additional Information:  Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time. Some bending, stooping and stretching. May be required to lift up to 30 lbs. Work is performed in a clinic office environment. Contact with staff, patients and outside agencies. Possible exposure to communicable disease and medical preparations common to clinic environment.

Lead Medical Interpreter (Spanish-speaking) 

United Family Medicine is seeking a full time Lead Medical Interpreter (Spanish-speaking) to assist clinic staff by facilitating cross-cultural communication for Spanish speaking patients of all ages. Provide language interpretation as patients interface with providers. Provide written translation services.

United Family Medicine is a Federally-Qualified Health Center in St. Paul, where patients receive community-based Family Practice medical care in addition to mental health, social work and other integrated services.

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Fluently interpret from the source language to the target language and back again.
  • Seek to understand and meet the needs of customers (patients, families, vendors, co-workers, etc.) through respectful, courteous and culturally sensitive interactions.
  • Know, understand and adhere to organizational policy related to the patient’s rights for confidential care.
  • Mediate between two parties typically provider and patient. Provides verbatim interpretation to preserve the medical record. Convey meaning of the message in the target language.
  • Convey the intent, tone, and style and language level of the speaker.
  • Document on the encounter form that language interpretation was provided.
  • Provide translation (written communication) of written materials from Spanish into English and English into Spanish as needed.
  • Take the lead to manage interpreters schedule, daily provider view to insert interpreters where needed. Check schedules daily.
  • Offer back up support for call to patient about insurance support, during down time if permitted by interpreting schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to read, write and speak fluently in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, major body systems, and medical terminology in Spanish and English.
  • Clear understanding of culture and customs of the groups and communities using the specified language.
  • Knowledge of Professional Standards and Protocols for Healthcare Interpreters
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationship with providers, clinic staff and others.
  • Exhibit and maintain professional and ethical behavior at all times.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to efficiently multi-task when work circumstances become fast-paced.
  • Ability to concentrate/listen for long periods of time.

Education & Experience:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent required.
  • At least one year interpreting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Minnesota Medical interpreter certification is strongly preferred.
  • National Certification (CMI, CHI, or CoreCHI) is preferred.
  • Must pass written and oral national certification within 6 months of hire date.

Physical Requirements:
May require prolonged periods of sitting/standing/listening/speaking
